Let’s get one thing out of the way first: interning in Cambodia does not mean roughing it. No outdoor toilets, no dial-up WiFi, no convincing yourself that “character building” is a substitute for air conditioning. Phnom Penh is a genuinely modern Southeast Asian capital — and where you live during your internship is going to feel less like a compromise and more like an upgrade.
Renting in Phnom Penh as an intern is one of the smartest financial decisions you will make during your placement abroad. Cambodia’s capital is one of Southeast Asia’s most affordable cities for young professionals and with the right information, you can secure a comfortable, well-located apartment for a fraction of what you would pay back home.
At InternshipSEA, we don’t just place you in a job. We place you in a lifetime opportunity that rivals anywhere you’ve lived before. Here’s what that actually looks like, neighborhood by neighborhood.
1. Toul Tom Poung (TTP) — The Beating Heart of Phnom Penh

Toul Tom Poung is often referred to as the Russian Market area, and offers a vibrant blend of culture, history, and modernity. This bustling neighbourhood is famous for its eponymous market, which is a treasure trove of unique souvenirs, handcrafted goods, and delectable street food. The market itself is a labyrinthine adventure, where every turn reveals something new and fascinating, from intricate silver jewellery to traditional Khmer textiles, making it a haven for shoppers and culture enthusiasts alike.
Beyond the market, Toul Tom Poung is a haven for foodies. The streets are lined with an eclectic mix of restaurants and cafes, offering everything from traditional Cambodian cuisine to international fare. Here, you can savoir the rich flavors of Amok, a traditional Cambodian curry, or enjoy a refreshing coconut at one of the many street stalls. The neighborhood’s culinary scene is ever-evolving, with new eateries popping up regularly, ensuring that there’s always something new to try.
The neighborhood has a long-established expat community, excellent street food within walking distance, a weekend market, and a relaxed, navigable layout. It is also home to many of the NGOs, development organizations, and social enterprises that InternshipSEA partners with.
2. Boeng Trabek — Calm and Clean

Just south of Toul Tom Poung, Boeng Trabek is where things get a little quieter without losing any of the convenience. Think newer condo developments, leafy side streets, and a five-minute tuk-tuk ride to everything Toul Tom Poung has to offer when you want it.
This is a popular choice for interns who want their own space at the end of a working day, modern buildings here often come with on-site gyms, pools, and 24-hour security, giving you that “I actually live somewhere nice” feeling without the price tag of BKK.
3. Boeung Keng Kang — The Classic International Neighbourhood

BKK has been Phnom Penh’s egxpat hub since the 1980s, and it shows in the best way. This is where you’ll find the city’s biggest concentration of co-working cafés, international restaurants, rooftop bars, and a nightlife scene that genuinely surprises first-timers. BKK has long been home to many NGOs as well as businesses catering to expats and tourists, and is now booming with new restaurants, coffee shops. bars and hotels. Dozens of restaurants are scattered across BKK with new ones popping up all the time including international brands like Burger King, Domino’s and KFC. Most of the bars and clubs in the area are at the north end of BKK1, especially along Streets 278 and 282, and across Norodom Blvd on Streets 308 29, 21, and in the micro-bar enclave of Bassac Lane.
Streets 278 and 282 are where Phnom Penh comes out to play, alongside the cluster of micro-bars tucked into Bassac Lane — easily one of the most distinctive nights out in the city. By day, BKK1 is dotted with boutique gyms, yoga studios, and enough flat-white-serving cafés to make any home barista jealous.
Apartments here are typically the most polished on the market: think fast fibre internet, in-building gyms, swimming pools, and serious security — ideal if you want your accommodation to feel like an extension of your social life, not just somewhere to sleep.
4. Wat Phnom and Daun Penh — Central, Characterful, Underrated

Daun Penh is Phnom Penh’s historic core, and it’s where the city’s grandest architecture lives with French colonial buildings, gilded pagodas, and the sweeping riverside promenade along the Tonlé Sap. It’s also home to major landmarks like Sorya Shopping Centre, making it one of the most central and well-connected places to base yourself.
Living here puts you within walking distance of sunset drinks on the riverfront, the Royal Palace, and some of the best traditional Khmer restaurants in the city — alongside a growing number of stylish apartment buildings offering the same modern comforts you’d find in BKK or TTP, just with a more local, lived-in feel.
5. Srah Chak and Chakto Mukh — Budget-Friendly with a Riverside

Tucked within Daun Penh, these two pockets are perfect if you want a central, riverside lifestyle without the BKK premium. Chakto Mukh sits right along the river, an easy stroll from the Royal Palace and the central market, while Srah Chak offers a quieter, more residential feel just a few streets back.
Not Sure Where to Choose? That’s What We’re Here For
Picking a neighborhood from another country, without ever having set foot in Phnom Penh, can feel like a guessing game — so we’ve made sure you don’t have to do it alone.
ISEA’s trusted in-country partners start putting together accommodation options for you before you even board the flight, based on your budget, your placement location, and the kind of lifestyle you’re after — whether that’s the social buzz of TTP, the polish of BKK, or the riverside calm of Daun Penh. Then, during your orientation week, their agents take you out on real viewings, so you get to see your shortlist in person before committing to anything.
Your Accommodation, Your Choice
With InternshipSEA, how you find your home is entirely up to you.
If you’d rather take the lead yourself, we recommend working directly with our trusted in-country partner, REAKH, who knows the Phnom Penh rental market inside out and can help you source options independently.
Or, if you’d rather arrive with everything already sorted, we can organise your accommodation for you — fully furnished, ready to move into, and waiting the moment you land. Even then, you’ll still get the chance to view it in person before you commit to moving in, just so you can be completely sure it’s right for you.
Either way, you’re covered. This is your internship, your city, and your home for the next few months — we just make sure the hard part is taken care of.
